From Allan's Cay in the north to Hog Cay in the south, The Exuma Islands
have a lot to offer both above and below the surface of the water. There
are thousands of miles of beaches, cays and inlets to be explored by foot
and by boat. Regattas, fishing and diving are the mainstay, but historical
attractions and natural reserves are all available to keep you entertained.
For those who like life at a little slower pace, the pink sandy beaches
and turquoise waters are the perfect setting when the simple pleasures
of peace and quiet are a priority.
Home to many boating competitions like The Family Island Regatta, The
New Year’s Day Cruising Regatta, and the widely revered National Out Island
Regatta, The Exuma Islands are considered by many yachtsmen to be one
of the best places in The Islands Of The Bahamas for sailing. The Exumas
are comprised of 365 cays. Boating north from Allan's Cay, sailors will
glide atop a hundred miles of pristine colourful water ranging from light
green to deep blue. Heading southward, sailors will follow uninhabited
beaches to Great Exuma and Hog Cay. Frequent stops are recommended to
explore the many hidden coves and to dive the brightly coloured reefs.
One stop that is especially revered is the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park
located on the north side of Great Exuma. This national park can only
be reached by boat and offers visitors views so magnificent that words
cannot begin to describe their beauty and splendor.
Speaking
of splendor, The Exuma Islands are also home to Elizabeth Harbour – one
of the largest and finest harbours in the world, allowing hundreds of
ships to anchor at one time. This is a great place to pick up provisions
and meet other sailors.
Visitors arriving by boat or those wishing to charter boats with or without
crews will find a selection of marina and rental facilities to help them
navigate these islands. Numerous harbours and anchorages also await the
seagoing visitor.
Numerous tournaments and regattas happen throughout the year in The Islands
Of The Bahamas. Check here to find out more. And on any given Thursday,
you can join one of our Boating Flings and sail your boat to The Islands
Of The Bahamas from Florida. Check here to find out more.
Whether
you like deep-sea fishing, reef fishing, bottom fishing or fly-fishing,
look no further than The Exuma Islands. The waters around The Exuma Islands
are filled with exciting and challenging game fish just waiting for you
to land. Record numbers of huge marlin, sailfish and wahoo are caught
in Exuma Sound, where the aqua-blue ocean drops 6,000 feet into the dark,
cool feeding grounds of trophy-size fish. Closer to Great Exuma island
are 60 square miles of crystal-clear flats where you can hunt for world-class
bonefish, snapper, grouper and even lobster. The flats are abundant with
large bonefish; even 10-pound fish are not uncommon. Fishing tournaments
are frequent on The Exumas, but the July 4th Annual Bonefish Tournament
at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club brings in competitors from all over the
world. There are also many fishing lodges on The Exuma Islands that offer
complete packages for the serious angler.
Although
boating and fishing are the two main attractions of The Exuma Islands,
there are several activities to participate in on land as well. Bicycling
and tennis are just a few of the enjoyable things visitors can do while
on land.
Bicycles are available anywhere, and The Islands Of The Bahamas provide
plenty of easy cycling terrain. But remember, traffic drives British-style,
so mind the crossroads, and be sure to give motor vehicles the "left-of-way."
Both
amateurs and pros (and all those in between) will be totally at home on
the fabulous tennis facilities in The Islands Of The Bahamas.
